About the event

'Swedger Island' is an exhibition by Chris J. Farrell containing the unravelling narrative of an imagined Scottish music festival and a questionable narrator’s account of it, anchoring his autofiction within an exhibition setting.

A looping film shown inside a gazebo, alongside paintings, monumental drawings, and ephemeral festival sculptures, renders a collective Scottish hauntology as a multidisciplinary, self-examining pseudo-mythology. Farrell uses painting, drawing, film, and installation to examine contemporary Scotland as a digitally embedded, hallucinatory folk memory. Working in oil paint, airbrush, charcoal, filmic installation, and sculpture, he rebuilds scenes from lived and imagined experience. By scavenging online media—YouTube rips, phone footage, and game textures—he stages these reconstructions through fictional self-portraits: Dr Euan Onyett and his student Rory Byrne. His practice sits between confession and invention, using autofiction as a medium to question the reliability of personal and collective experience in our digitised age.
