About the event

JTTE festival artist Keioui Keijaun Thomas facilitates a workshop titled SHAPESHIFTERS. This workshop will provide a critical and research-driven exploration into world building through performance art. Participants will utilise a range of approaches centering shapeshifting as a way to actualise live performance work. Through studies and iterations, language and writing, movement and choreography, as well as sound and music, the group will explore how these modes of creating social spaces can be used as a poetic tool for subverting discourse by thinking about lighting and atmosphere, objects and materials, and sculpture and installation. The workshop is structured as a lab / think tank that proceeds as a series of screenings, workshops, collective warm ups, written exercises and on-site explorations. This workshop will provide an intersectional analysis of how culture, race, and gender identity help shape the way we cultivate and queer realities through performance.

SHAPESHIFTERS is open to people with an interest in performance and interdisciplinary practices. No prior performance experience necessary. The workshop involves some led movement practices such stretching and breathwork, and participants should wear clothing they are comfortable moving in. The workshop is designed to meet everyone’s access needs, and prioritises creating safer spaces for exploring each set of activities. All workshop activities are designed to be accessible and comfortable for various needs.
