About the event

Jennifer Wicks and New String Collective present ‘Seuls Ensemble’ – the first instalment of an experimental film and sound performance exploring the intersections between movement, moving image and drawing, and the interstitial spaces between sounds and images.

The installation is a work in progress in which the audience will experience the process of collaboration from inside the architecture of the film and sound installation. Interrogating the notion of liveness, immaterial qualities of sound and sculptural elements of film and sound.

This work outlines the inherent connections between sound, moving image, and sensory perception, and explores the material and immaterial. The sonic performance enhances the corporeal sensation of sound evolving within the space: resonating, and echoing, creating a distinctly immersive atmosphere.  The performances will consist of several compositions as direct responses to the film; including improvisations using the film as a score, devised collaborative pieces and graphic scores by Wicks.

Seuls Ensemble is a multiscreen installation made in response to a Norman McLaren research residency (2021-2022) at University of Stirling. Wicks worked with the Norman McLaren archive held within the Art Collection. Seuls ensemble, shot on 16mm film, is a visual music composition containing object and form. It takes McLaren’s film Pas de Deux as a starting point and deconstructs it to explore temporality, the mechanics of movement, perception, and gender roles.

The work is stripped of narrative and anecdotal convention; pared back to its most basic elements to create abstract form and negative space. The film was made in collaboration with choreographer Emily-Jane Boyle and dancer Lucy Ireland.  New String Collective Pushing at the edges of conventional string orchestra, New String Collective is a brand new ensemble made up of some of Scotland’s most exciting, radical string players.

Jennifer Wicks is a Glasgow-based artist. She makes drawings, moving image, sound, and sculptures. Her research-based practice demonstrates her continued interest in the interplay between sound and image to investigate the aesthetics of images, the materiality of film, the sculptural possibilities of sound and the visualisation of music. Wicks creates scores for her moving image work and visual scores for performance. She explores materiality and evolution through process and abstraction to reconsider the complexities of memory and how language is interpreted and experienced.   She makes music with WOMEN’S HOUR (J.Wicks and Murray CY). LP on L.I.E.S. Records. **To coincide with the exhibition ‘Movement’ at Macroberts Arts Centre, Stirling that features Alan Davie, Katy Dove and Jennifer Wicks.

The venue is wheelchair accessible but does not have an accessible toilet.
